Snowflake or Valentine Table Runner

Instructor: Pam Churches

Monday and Tuesday, January 30th and 31st, 2023; 10 a.m. – 4 p,m.

This is a two-day class; you may leave your machine and supplies at Calico Cupboard overnight.

Embroider a snowflake table runner that is quilted in the hoop. Finished size is approximately 15” x 36”. NOTE: You must have an embroidery machine with a hoop that accommodates a 7” x 8.5” stitch field.

Fabric and embroidery requirements:

  • Trapunto Snowflake Runner embroidery CD by Amelie Scott Designs

  • Enough stabilizer for 12 hoopings; pattern recommends Floriani Wet and Gone or OESD Aqua Mesh Water Soluble stabilizer; I used Floriani Stitch and Wash

  • Twelve 4” squares of batting – can be scraps from your stash

  • Twelve 4’ squares of snowflake fabric – interfaced with SF101

  • Twelve 4’ squares of organza – optional – will make the snowflakes look sparkly

  • 1 yard of background fabric

  • 1 yard backing fabric

  • ¼ yard of accent fabric - for the corner triangles (can be the same as the snowflake fabric)

  • ¼ yard binding fabric

  • 1 ¼ yard Pellon SF101

  • Painter’s tape or RNK pink embroidery tape

  • Water soluble marking pen or Frixion pen to mark center of block

  • Embroidery thread to match the snowflake

  • Embroidery thread for quilting – matching bobbin recommended

  • Cotton thread for sewing blocks together

  • Batting or battilizer for sandwiching quilt – should be approximately 42” x 21”

  • 505 or other basting spray to sandwich quilt

Also bring to class:

  • Embroidery machine with power cord, embroidery foot, embroidery arm, USB with pattern loaded, required hoop and magnetic hoop optional for quilting

  • Sewing attachments for your machine such as extension table or accessory tray, ankle and foot, ¼” foot, and foot pedal

  • Cotton thread and prewound bobbins; empty bobbin for winding matching thread for the quilting portion

  • Scissors, applique scissors, seam ripper, pins and anything else you need when you sew

  • Small cutting mat, rotary cutter, acrylic ruler and table top ironing station if you have one (otherwise you will be sharing the classroom iron with others

Prior to class:

  • Load your machine’s file format of the pattern to your USB

  • Cut 12 (7” x 8.5”) pieces of background fabric interfaced with SF 101; I find it easier to interface a slightly larger piece of background fabric with SF101 then cut to size – this creates perfectly interfaced rectangles with completely sealed edges

  • Cut 12 (4”) squares of batting, snowflake fabric interfaced as noted above with SF101, and organza (optional)

Looking forward to seeing you in class!

Country or Valentine Hearts

Monday and Tuesday, January 30th and 31st, 2023 10 a.m. -4 p.m. OR Friday and Saturday, February 10th and 11th, 2023; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. This is a two-day class you may leave your machine and supplies at Calico Cupboard overnight.

Embroider a table runner for Valentine’s Day that is quilted in the hoop. Finished size is approximately 15” x 36”. NOTE: You must have an embroidery machine with a hoop that accommodates a 7” x 8.5” stitch field.

Fabric and embroidery requirements:

  • Country Hearts Runner embroidery CD by Amelie Scott Designs

  • Enough stabilizer for 12 hoopings; pattern recommends Floriani Wet and Gone or OESD Aqua Mesh Water Soluble stabilizer. I used Floriani Stitch and Wash

  • 1 ½ yards Pellon SF101 Shape Flex interfacing

  • Twelve 6” squares of heart fabric

  • 1 yard background fabric –there are 12 blocks; I used six different backgrounds repeating each block twice – a fat quarter or quarter yard of each fabric is plenty or use your stash; a nine inch square for each background is sufficient.

  • 1 yard backing fabric

  • ¼ yard accent fabric for the corners

  • ¼ yard binding fabric

  • Twelve 6” squares steam a seam light – not included in pattern instructions – I used this on the back of the hearts to adhere them to background fabric to avoid puckering

  • Painter’s tape or RNK pink embroidery tape

  • Water soluble pen or Frixion marking pen to mark centers of fabric

  • Embroidery thread – embroidery in the center of hearts uses two colors – stem color and a flower color; I used the same color for the flowers and finishing stitch on the hearts

  • Embroidery thread with matching bobbin for quilting

  • Cotton thread for sewing blocks together

  • Batting or battilizer for sandwiching quilt – should be approximately 42” x 21”

  • 505 or other basting spray to sandwich quilt layers

Also bring to class:

  • Embroidery machine with power cord, embroidery foot, embroidery arm, USB with pattern loaded, required hoop and magnetic hoop optional for quilting

  • Sewing attachments for your machine such as extension table or accessory tray, ankle and foot, ¼” foot, and foot pedal

  • Cotton thread and prewound bobbins; empty bobbin for winding matching thread for the quilting portion

  • Scissors, applique scissors, seam ripper, pins and anything else you need when you sew

  • Small cutting mat, rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and table ironing station if you have one (otherwise you will be sharing the classroom iron and cutting notions

Prior to class:

  • Load your machine’s file format of the pattern to your USB

  • Cut (12) 7” x 8.5” rectangles of background fabric interfaced with SF101. I find it easier to apply SF101 to a slightly larger piece then cut to size – this creates perfect interfaced rectangles with completely sealed edges

  • Cut (48) 2” squares of accent fabric (4 per block for corners)

  • Cut (12) 6” squares of heart fabric interfaced with SF101 as instructed above

  • Cut (12) 6” squares of steam a seam light and press to back of interfaced heart fabric. I find that using a light adhesive such as steam a seam allows me to press the shape to the background fabric to avoid puckering within the shape during the embroidery process.

If you do not have a table top ironing station, you will find that having your fabric prepared will save time in the classroom and allow you to make the most of your time during class.

Looking forward to seeing you in class!
